Fuel 10k Chunky Granola

Whilst on the surface granola can look like the healthy breakfast choice to help fuel your run many leading brands are high in saturate fats and bulked out with a high oat content. Nutritional brekkie specialists Fuel 10k look to redress the balance with their Chunky Granola offering available in three flavours: Fruit Loaded, Chocolate Loaded and Nut Loaded.

What’s in a name?

First let’s clear up any confusion. What’s that you’re saying? ‘I want to fuel a marathon not a mere 10k!’ So, the name isn’t a reference to that over-way-too-quickly race distance, it refers instead to the theory first put forward by Anders Ericsson (and championed by Malcolm Gladwell) that 10,000 hours is the amount needed to achieve excellence in any given field. Now you know…

Taste test

In a word: excellent. Equally as good as any granola we have ever indulged in and made that much nicer knowing it’s doing us good (more on which below.) RunningMonkey had the Fruit Loaded version on test and it’s a well-judged mix of sweetness and slight sharpness from the generously sized nuggets of freeze-dried strawberry. The texture works well too with the dried cranberries and apple adding some chew to proceedings and the toasted oats giving a satisfying crunch. Providing the bag’s given a good shake there’s little in the way of ‘dust’ – the disappointing blight of so many cereals – with the only downside being, in our opinion, that an extra handful of strawberries wouldn’t have gone amiss.

Okay, so taste is spot on, but what makes Fuel 10k Chunky Granola that bit more special? Firstly the nutritional output is admirable. This naturally varies between flavours with protein slightly higher in the Nut Loaded option whilst the seemingly less healthy Chocolate Loaded actually has a little less sugar (12.4g per 50g serving compared to 15.1g) than the Fruit Loaded. Being fairly representative of the range though Fruit Loaded delivers, per 50g, 213kcal with 31.8g carbs, 5.7g fat (0.9g saturates) and 7.1g of protein. Added to this is the fortification of vitamins Niacin, E, Pantothenic Acid, B6, Riboflavin, Thiamin, Folic Acid, and B12 – a solid bonus to any breakfast of champions.

Cost considerations

Fuel 10k Chunky Granola certainly seems to hit the right note; the fortification makes sense for those with a physically active lifestyle, the protein hit at breakfast is no bad thing (in fact, a good thing) and the low saturated fat levels are as all granolas should be, but sadly rarely are.

Fuel 10k Chunky Granola is available in packs of 6 x 400g boxes for £17.94, though currently on offer at £12. At £2 a box – even at £2.90 full-price per box – it’s not unreasonable priced. By way of rough comparison to a fairly top-end competitor, Dorset Cereals Chocolate Macadamia & Almond Granola (550g) retails at £3.80 – and has twice the amount of saturated fats…
