RunningMonkey has fallen in love and the name of our new paramour is Oatopia. The company, founded in 2010 originally in the form of a small mobile catering truck, produce exemplary flapjacks and energy balls with the intention of ‘naturally fuelling life’s adventures.’ As Oatopia came recommended to RunningMonkey by ultra legend Dan Lawson, we thought it only right we take a look (and taste.) And we’re really glad we did…
First up then are the Oatopia Energy Bombs – we had three flavours on test: Banana, Raw Cacao, and Chia Seed and Vanilla. Each generously sized bundle of energy comes in at 50g and, although values vary slightly between flavours, you can expect around 125kcal per ball with 5.5g of carbs (1.5g from sugars), 12.2g fat (4g saturates), 2.2g fibre and 1.6g of protein. When it comes to fuelling the run you can see why they’re called bombs. Oatopia go to great lengths to ensure that their ingredients are of the highest quality and additions like the omega 3 mixed seeds (sesame, pumpkin, sunflower, linseed) found in their Chia Seed and Vanilla version all help ensure added value.
All this would count for nothing if the Oatopia Energy Bombs didn’t taste good, but trust us (and Dan Lawson) they do. There’s sweetness to them of course, but nothing overwhelming and the natural flavours from each variety we tried came through perfectly balanced. The Raw Cacao version takes our winning vote, but if you’re feeling more adventurous there’s the likes of Beetroot or Ginseng and Goji Berry on the menu too.
Exceptional flavours, good texture that’s just on the right side of crumble, and a more than reasonable price tag of £2 per 50g Oatopia Energy Bomb.
Turning now to the Oatopia Flapjacks and first a confession: RunningMonkey isn’t usually a huge fan of the flapjack, they always seem like slightly hard work, slightly demanding as a foodstuff. Now though we’re converts.
The Oatopia Flapjacks, again made only with the highest quality ingredients including organically grown oats containing all the natural oat germ and oat bran, are simply delicious. The varieties we had on test – Coffee and Walnut, and Belgian Milk Chocolate and Orange – were moist in texture and tasted exactly of the advertised flavour. And they are packed full of natural energy for running; the 180g bars give, on average, 108g of carbs of which 4.5g are sugars, 32.4g of fat (6.5g saturates), 9.5g of fibre and 12g of protein. At a whopping 768kcal no one’s claiming these are diet material, but for fuelling a run they hit exactly the right note.
Amongst the more unusual flavours are Iced Lemon Curd and Almond Bakewell. The 180g Oatopia Flapjacks retail at £2.20.
And for the record Dan Lawson’s succinct review of Oatopia products: ‘bloody lovely swear by these…’ – Read the RunningMonkey profile of Dan here.
