Kalenji Elioplay 3-in-1 Jacket

The Elioplay 3-in-1 Jacket from Kalenji – whose brand name derives from a West Kenyan tribe, just so you know – is an intriguing proposition on paper and even more so in practice.

Designed for cooler or wetter runs the Elioplay looks part jacket, part puzzle at first glance; comprised of two individual pieces that can be snapped together or worn separately so that it presents the options for full jacket, gilet or hooded bolero on the run. The material (100% polyester) does a fairly credible job of wind-blocking and easily withstood lighter showers but with the two pieces connected as a ‘full’ jacket breathability wasn’t it’s strong point, although adequate ventilation is accomplished by simply unzipping a little.

Kalenji Elioplay 3-in-1 JacketThe strength here of course is the flexibility of use. The stand-alone gilet is meshed across the shoulders and upper back and does a really good job of adding a thin additional layer on the run whilst providing storage in both a front zipped pocket and larger, open, lumber pocket. There’s also plenty of reflective detailing for running in low-light conditions.

The bolero option gives full arm coverage and a hood (with elasticated adjustment) and whilst the truncated form might look a little odd there’s a practical application for cold runs when a fuller jacket isn’t required.

Attaching the two pieces together is achieved with a combination of press-stud at the rear and two hidden magnetic buttons. Again, the result is useful for shoulder-month runner – possibly not mid-winter – with all the storage and reflectivity of the two individual components. It can be a real benefit to have an adaptable layer, particularly when running with a pack when something as light (220g all-in) and ‘stashable’ as the Elioplay 3-in-1 can be so easily stowed. And at £44.99 you are getting a fair amount for your money here.

The Kalenji Elioplay 3-in-1 is available in sizes XXS to M/L and just the one pink/orange/reflective colour-way. It’s available in-store and online at
