Falke Hybrid Jacket
RunningMonkey has had the new Falke Hybrid Jacket in the office – and indeed out on several runs – now for a couple of months, but we’ve held off on review until the temperatures have fallen sufficiently enough to really see its true potential.
The Falke Hybrid Jacket is, you see, a piece of kit that thrives in, almost demands, much colder running weather. Not that it isn’t suitable for late-autumn or potentially blustery early spring running, just that the outstanding thermal properties really show themselves the closer to zero you get. Aesthetically the jacket looks like a padded gilet over a long-sleeved base layer – hence, we suspect, ‘hybrid’ – a combination that looks good and balances protection from chilled wind with freedom of movement through the arms and back.
The lining is Primaloft, one of the foremost insulators and something you’ll frequently find in market-leading apparel from the likes of The North Face and Patagonia; not only does it breathes exceptionally well but provides warmth without bulk – the Falke Hybrid Jacket weighs in at under 350g for a medium. Another advantage is ‘packability’ – if you’re hitting long trails or tackling an ultra with a pack the jacket is easily stowable, particularly with a small compression bag.
The back panel is soft and elasticated for both comfort and flexibility and the lack of padding through the rear helps radiate excess heat, an advantage you wouldn’t get with a traditional ‘full’ gilet and one you really appreciate if you do run with a pack or hydration system on. The arms are similarly soft and supple with thumb loops to stop the sleeves from riding up.
There are two front, zipped pockets, and reflectives in the form of brand logo to the chest, strips to the rear and ‘L’ and ‘R’ on the respective sleeves in case you forget which way round to wear it.
With current temperatures on the run still hovering around the 5degrees mark RunningMonkey is pretty certain that we have yet to see the best of the Falke Hybrid Jacket. We’ve seldom looked forward to deep winter so much.
The Falke Hybrid Jacket is available in women’s cut in chilli-red or black and in men’s cut with the choice of holly- or grass-green or black. It retails at £155.00 with further details and online purchase at falke.com
