Scott Jurek Completes the Bob Graham Round
Ultra-running legend Scott Jurek has been in the UK testing his legs on the infamous Bob Graham Round, the 66mile, 27,000ft of climb circuit of 42 of the highest peaks in the English Lake District with a 24-hours cut-off; he did it with 16minutes to spare…
Scott Jurek’s impressive, to use an understatement, running CV includes wins at the historic 153mile Spartathlon, the Hardrock 100, the Badwater 135mile ultra-marathon, the Miwok 100K, and no fewer then seven consecutive victories at the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run. Commenting on his latest achievement he commented: ‘We cut it real close in the end with only 16 minutes to spare, but we did it! 23:44 for the Bob Graham Round. Quite possibly one of the most difficult courses I have done in my life!’
First run back in 1932 by Bob Graham, a hotelier in Keswick, Cumberland, the 42 Peak Round has become a testing ground for the supremely fit; each year more than 100 ultra-distance fell runners attempt the 27,000ft of ascent within the allotted 24 hours, with only around a third succeeding.
In 2013 147 runners took the Bob Graham Round challenge (19 women) with 65 successful ‘rounds’, eight of them women; the fastest times of the year were 19:25 for the men and 21:58 for the women. The record, which has stood since 1982, is a blistering 13:53 set by Billy Bland.
