Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer
Once on a while a product comes along that really bends our minds – the phenomenal Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer Hooded Jacket certainly did just that. It might look flimsy – to be honest not unlike a plastic– but don’t let that fool you, it’s wind-blocking properties are excellent, it adds great outer-layer air-trapping thermal properties and withstands a reasonable degree of rain too. And did we mention the weight? 54g, that’s less than most energy gels and running bars.
Certainly the Ghost Whisperer isn’t going to keep you dry in torrential rain, but protection against spring/autumn showers is pretty much guaranteed and where we find it truly comes into its own is when races have jackets on their ‘essential carry items’ list; you know you won’t need a jacket, they know you won’t need a jacket – but them’s the rules… With the Ghost Whisperer you can simply stuff it into the integrated storage bag and ball the whole thing into a pocket or backpack – then, if things do deteriorate, it’s on hand and you won’t even have noticed you were carrying it.
Breathability is only middling, so sweat does tend to build up, but with a full-length zip it’s easy enough to add some front venting. Again despite its flimsy appearance, this jacket has proven remarkably tough – it might look like you could poke a finger through it, but the Nylon shell uses Ribstop tech, where, during weaving, thicker reinforcement threads are interwoven at regular intervals in a crosshatch pattern for excellent durability. For those extra touches the Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer has reflective trim for safety and an integrated hood – although a hoodless version is also available.
If you’re looking for a truly go-anywhere jacket – or are fed up with having to argue with race marshals about a jackets necessity – the Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer couldn’t be recommended highly enough.
